The wealthy Neapolitan entrepreneur Domenico Soriano has lived under the same roof with Filumena for more than forty years. The two meet during the war, when she has to earn her living in the brothel, where he often visits.

 

For all these years, she puts up with his endless travels, infidelities and affairs, maintaining his home, taking care of his irritable mother and, last but not least, his thriving business.

 

However, her patience reaches its limit when Domenico decides to marry a young and beautiful woman, who in turn wants to rob him to the bone.

Filumena pretends to be terminally ill and asks him to marry her so that she will not be welcomed into the afterlife as a sinner. After this hastily arranged wedding, the bride jumps from her deathbed and tells the groom that she has three children and one of them may be his.

 

After many twists and turns, stormy scandals, criminal revelations, flourishing lies, suffering and outbursts of despair, love triumphs in the play, because despite her difficult fate, Filumena has managed to preserve within herself the ability to love, forgive and believe.
